Zao Onsen itself is a small, walkable mountain village with huge charms, offering a classic small-town Japan experience. This being an onsen hot spring town, the smell of sulfur is rich in the air -- a scent that can please or repel depending on individual tastes. In addition to several public onsens, some hotels have their own in-house hot spring facilities. Accommodation options range from small inns to a few bigger resorts like Zao Shiki no Hotel , where guests can choose between traditional Japanese or Western-style rooms. Zao Onsen has public hot spring bath houses, though many of the area's hotels offer in-house onsen facilities.

Breakfast and dinner is included as part of the room rate at some accommodations.

  • If you're lucky you'll receive a serving of the phenomenal Yonezawa beef, which is raised in the same prefecture. In the village, there are several quality restaurants serving the usual Japanese fare as well as classic izakaya-style bars. Need a break from Japanese food? But if it's nightlife you're after, you'll be partying on your own.

This is not a party town and the streets are fairly dead when the sun goes down. After dark Zao Onsen adopts its own spooky vibe, with steam from the onsen waters rising in big white poofs out of the drains and streams that trickle through the town's hilly slopes. In some areas, colorful lights illuminate the steam. Zao Onsen is worthy of a three-night stay, which will allow you ample time to fit in a bit of riding, hot spring soaking and snow monster exploring. If possible, go during the week -- we had the mountain to ourselves and lift lines were non-existent.

Weekends are another story. The best time to see the monsters is late January to early March, before the spring warmth seeps in. From January 27 to March 4 the cable cars run from a. The easiest way to get to Zao Onsen is by train and bus. Bullet trains run direct from Tokyo to Yamagata Station throughout the day. The ride takes just over 2. Some resorts offer pickups direct from Yamagata Station, which is about 16 kilometers away.

TL;DR: The best thing about this place is the price. Quality: Snowboard was in poor condition. Wax was either not done or done horrendously. Boots were okay with single dial boa system or traditional lace. Bindings were okay. Helmet had a broken goggle clip thingy.

    Description

Service: Staff which served us was not knowledgeable, and a tad rude. The boards were fitted poorly, the length of the board given was far too short. A cm male was given. The bindings were fitted poorly, the "equal duck stance" for a regular rider was set with the right foot having a wider angle than the left.

The bindings for another rider were fitted the wrong way around. Conclusion: Price is good, but would highly suggest with either going with another store, or bringing along a knowledgeable friend who is happy to select and setup equipment.

I personally didn't like this place. Hi Howard, I'm sorry you feel this way about everything at monster ski hire. I would just like to let you know though that this store on trip advise is our store located in town, not at Leesville. Our store in town is more expensive as gear is different and they do not offer deals with these coupons.

Never been to the Australian skiing scene before, i was welcomed with very friendly and knowledgeable staff, having been skiing for several years I could tell that the staff knew what they were talking about regarding their range of skis and boards and helped me get ready for the hill. Thanks monster for making my holiday easy and affordable. Loved my experience at Monster!

Had the best service and quality gear. Couldn't recommend any more highly. I will definitely be back. Recently hired a pile of gear for a week. When we brought it back we put in all in a pile on the floor as directed. The staff went straight to one pair of skis, pulled them out and checked the serial numbers. They then stated that these were not the same ones that we hired.

I know that we were pretty careful about looking after our gear as theft is reasonably common. The staff then wanted a credit card imprint to pay for the missing skis. When I complained, miraculously the right pair of skis were found, sitting there leaning up against a wall. So, all was good. On the trip home I thought about what had just happened.

It seems very odd that the missing skis were found so quickly and that they were not in the system. Surely, whoever had brought back the 'missing' skis would have been notified of the mix up and the staff should have entered the serial numbers of these skis into the system.
